asvMatthew:1 @ ENGLISH: TITLE: American Standard Version DESCRIPTION: The American Standard Version (ASV) of the Holy Bible was first published in 1901 by Thomas Nelson & Sons, and has earned a high reputation among the modern translations, and has become the foundation for several newer translations as well. Although the English used in the ASV is somewhat archaic, it isn't nearly as hard to understand as some passages of the King James Version of nearly three hundred years earlier.

bweMatthew:1 @ ENGLISH: TITLE: Bible in Worldwide English NT DESCRIPTION: The Bible in Worldwide English (BWE)\par This New Testament was originally prepared by Annie Cressman, who died in 1993. She was a Canadian Bible teacher in Liberia in West Africa. Whilst teaching students in a Bible School where the language used was English, she found that she was spending more time explaining the meaning of the English than she was teaching the Bible itself. So she decided to write this simple version in easy English so that her students could easily understand.\par\par In 1959 the Full Gospel Publishing House in Toronto, Canada, printed a trial edition of the Gospel of Mark. A further edition was published in 1962 by the American Bible Society. The whole New Testament was first published by SOON Publications in India in 1969 in hardback form. This was assisted by Operation Mobilisation (OM) and was reprinted in 1971.\par\par The vision to reprint a new edition of the whole New Testament has now been carried out by SOON in conjunction with EPH and OM. Where a change to more modern words has been made, this has been kept in line with the the Authorised Version. RIGTHS: unknown PUBLISHER: freedom for bible ORG

STANDING LAW –– policy directives applicable over time to classes of individuals (e.g., do not kill; children, obey your parents; merchants, have equal measures; magistrates, execute rapists), in contrast to particular directions for an individual (e.g., the order for Samuel to anoint David at a particular time and place) or positive commands for distinct incidents (e.g., God's order for Israel to exterminate certain Canaanite tribes at a certain point in history)

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Ruth:1 RUTH - The Book of Ruth offers a striking contrast to the Book of Judges, but its story is associated with the same period. In Judges, national sin and corruption portray a dark picture. The story of Ruth the Moabitess and her loyalty and devotion to Naomi, her Hebrew mother-in-law, presents the reader with a picture of the nobler side of Hebrew life in the days of the judges.

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Proverbs:1 PROVERBS - This book is a compendium of proverb collections. Although Solomon inspired the development of the book, its entire content did not derive from him. A proverb is a short, pithy saying with practical implications. The ones included here cover a variety of subjects, for example, chastity, control of the tongue, laziness, knowledge, relations with others, justice. Perhaps above everything else in Proverbs there is the reiterated assertion that the source of true wisdom is "the fear of the Lord".

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Daniel:1 DANIEL - Traditionally considered as the work of the Prophet Daniel in exile in Babylon during the 6th century B.C., many modern scholars classify the book as an "apocalypse" that was the product of a pious Jew living under the persecution of Antiochus Epiphanes (175-164 B.C.). In a series of events and visions, the author presents a view of history in which God rules and prevails over men and nations to achieve ultimate victory for the "saints" of God.

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Hosea:1 HOSEA - Sometimes called the "Prophet of Divine Love," Hosea was a native of Israel and was called to be God’s spokesman during that kingdom’s darkest hour. The apostasy of his own people was enough to break Hosea’s heart, but he also bore a heavy cross in his own life - his wife had proved unfaithful. In this bitter experience Hosea came to fathom God’s love for his erring children and pleads with his people to repent and avail themselves of God’s divine compassion and a love that will not let Israel go.

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Nahum:1 NAHUM - This book is a vivid prediction of the approaching downfall of Nineveh, the capital city of Assyria, one of the most warlike of the ancient heathen nations. Of the Prophet Nahum, whose name means "consolation" or "comfort", little is known. His purpose was to comfort his people, long harassed by Assyria, with the promise that this cruel and oppressing people would soon meet destruction at God’s hand.

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Zephaniah:1 ZEPHANIAH - This book, though brief, is comprehensive, embracing the two great themes of prophetic teaching: judgment and salvation - both extending to all nations. In some great catastrophe of his day, perhaps the Scythian invasion (c. 626 B.C.), Zephaniah sees God’s terrible judgment upon the nations, including Judah. He exhorts the people to repent and assures them that God will dwell in the midst of a righteous remnant following repentance.

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Zechariah:1 ZECHARIAH - Sometimes called the "Apocalypse of the Old Testament", this book contains the messages of the Prophet Zechariah, a contemporary of Haggai. The main division of the book ( Zechariah:1-8 , Zechariah:9-14 ) are noticeably dissimilar in both style and subject matter, a fact that has led some to assign the last division ( Zechariah:9-14 ) to another author. The first eight chapters are primarily concerned with the rebuilding of the Temple, although the language used is highly symbolical. Chapters Zechariah:9-14 deal with "last things", the "end time". Many Messianic references are found, and the writer foresees the Day of the Lord when Israel will be restored, the nations judged, and God’s kingdom triumphant.

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Matthew:1 MATTHEW - From at least the 2nd century A.D., the Gospel of Matthew has been ascribed to Matthew the publican, tax collector, and disciple. It is the most complete account of Jesus’ teachings and was written to convince the writer’s Jewish audience that Jesus was the Messiah descended from David, the One promised by the Old Testament Prophets. It is peculiarly the Gospel for Israel. The most significant teaching passages are the Sermon on the Mount ( Matthew:5-7 ) and the parable sections (especially Chapter Matthew:13 ).

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Luke:1 LUKE - There is almost universal agreement that Luke, the "beloved physician" ( Colossians:4:14 ) who accompanied Paul on his missionary travels, was the author of the third Gospel. Luke wrote to present Jesus as the Universal Savior, the compassionate healer and teacher. His careful historical approach is revealed in the preface, which states that the author has traced "all things from the very first". Unlike Mark, this author includes an account of the Virgin Birth, and unlike Matthew he extensively describes the Perean Ministry (Chapters Luke:9-18 ).

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@Philipians:1 PHILIPIANS - In this letter, which is a message of joy, Paul expresses his gratitude for the Philippians’ love and material assistance. The Epistle is uniquely significant because of its presentation of the humility of Jesus. Its practicality is also observed in Paul’s advice to Euodia and Syntyche.

From index@BIBLEBOOKSUMMARY.txt@
kjv@1Peter:1 1PETER - The author describes himself as "Peter an apostle of Jesus Christ", and there is no overriding reason to doubt the truth of his claim, although the beautiful Greek style employed has led some scholars to believe that the actual writing may have been done by an associate (probably a secretary). The contents breathe the spirit of Peter. His speeches recorded in Acts indicate a similar attitude toward persecution and suffering. The letter here reflects a time of suffering and trial. No doubt the widespread persecution of the Christians by the Roman authorities was the occasion of the "fiery trial" ( 1Peter:4:12 ). The writer admonishes his readers to a life of purity, of godly living, and exhorts them to steadfastness and faithfulness.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyAlcohol The problem, as I see it, is this: People who regularly drink alcohol as a lifesyle choice too often "fall off the wagon." (I did not say everyone who drinks a glass of wine falls off the wagon--but there are dangerous tendencies for those who regularly drink to have problems related to alchohol.) The influence of others can also be problematic.

index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyAnger Two Greek words are used in the New Testament for our English word "anger." One means "passion, energy" and the other means "agitated, boiling." Biblically, anger is God-given energy intended to help us solve problems.

index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyForgiveness The forgiveness of our sins assures us that God is rightly related to us, but discipline causes us to draw more closely to him.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyForgiveness It is a sad commentary on modern Christianity that so many have diluted the word forgiveness to the improper and worthless concept of, "I am not angry with you but you must still pay for your wrongdoing." Our entire eternal destiny and assurance of resurrection to everlasting life depends on there being only one valid meaning for the word forgiveness in the Bible, "to be freed from ones own deserved future punishment."

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyForgiveness Forgiveness is not a psychological assent that you have overcome your emotional anger toward the offender.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyStealing In the Old T there were circumstances when stealing food for a starving family was not classed as sin.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyStealing In which case, if the word of God cannot be possessed by a single man, it therefore follows that it wasn't actually the possessors 'possession'; more of a physical embodiment of a spiritual omnipresence/omnipotence - and thus would it have been actually been the TRUE sin for him to class the passing on of this knowledge to be 'stealing', as using your above arguments pertaining to this, it would be him 'stealing' your right to this divine knowledge?

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyStealing Perhaps part of the reason why it is easy to "steal" in our culture is that much stealing is against "companies" which are large and anonymous and everyone assumes have plenty of money (and maybe even insurance).

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@

index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence When Edward Gibbon wrote his classic account of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, he reported countless examples of Christian violence and fanaticism.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence Evangelist Franklin Graham has described his horror on finding so many Koranic passages that command the killing of infidels: the Koran, he thinks, "preaches violence." Prominent conservatives Paul Weyrich and William Lind argued that "Islam is, quite simply, a religion of war," and urged that Muslims be encouraged to leave US soil.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence In an article entitled, "Throwing Stones at the Quran from a Glass House", The American Muslim claims that the verses of violence and war in the Bible can be misread in "exactly the same way as some verses in the Qur'an" (emphasis ours).

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence In other words, the on-line magazine alleges that, like the Quran, there are Biblical verses with open-ended commands to violence that are not bound by historical context within the passage itself.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence Nevertheless, to support their claim, The American Muslim quotes sixteen of the worst passages that the Bible has to offer in the way of violence.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence Again, this is a historical narration that clearly refers to an obscure tribe, unlike many of the open-ended passages of violence against unbelievers, "idolaters," polytheists, Jews and Christians found in the Qur'an.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence Many of these are unfortunately rather gruesome, since the main theme of the Old Testament is warnings and stories about how it says societies were punished for mass lawless and hurtful behaviour, even to the extent of having war brought on them by God, that seem to have been designed to scare societies where crime and violence were rampant into behaving more ethically.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence These passages are both violent, yes I agree but the simple fact of the matter is that, that violence is to defend your belief and gods name.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence This does not do away with the very troubling issue of violence in the passage, but it's helpful for me to concentrate on what it's saying about the covenant between God and His people-- that it is not simply a contract between political allies or a King and his subordinates-- but that it is more akin to marriage.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyViolence This is not very related to what I was trying to express; I don't have much original to contribute along these lines -- except to continue to assert that God has bought our peace though sacrifice, not through violence.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWorry To worry is to assume a responsibility that is not necessarily ours to assume; failing to recognize that God is bigger than any problem we might have, and loves us enough to seek our highest good in the midst of every situation.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWorry The Bible mentions worry in several passages, and it is actually considered a sin because a worrier does not put his or her trust in the living God.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWorry Worry happens when we assume responsibility God never intended us to have.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWorry (If fear and worry are taking your emotions into even slight upsets then you need to pull yourself back and face it.) Let yourself see in the spirit things having happened already even though you haven't seen the manifestation come to pass yet.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWrath He cautioned them not to assume every earthly calamity is a manifestation of divine wrath and that those who suffer greatly must be guilty of great sin:

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWrath Several passages in Scripture speak of "the wrath to come." John the Baptist used that phrase when he saw the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWrath Beyond that, Scripture assures us that eternal wrath is something men choose for themselves.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWrath Mild words, gentle expressions, delivered with kindness and tenderness, humility and submission; these will work upon a man's passions, weaken his resentments, and break and scatter the storm of wrath raised in his breast, just breaking forth in a very boisterous and blustering manner; so high winds are sometimes laid by soft showers.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
index:GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES GoogleSurveyWrath Even a righteous wrath by overindulgence (excess) may pass all too easily into sin if we give in to the devil.

From index@GOOGLESURVEYQUOTES.txt@
