Peter learned a great deal about his sinful nature during the miracle of the fish, enough so that he left everything he had behind. His first reaction was to have Jesus leave him most likely because he realized that there was nothing he could do to change himself. Jesus had other plans for him thankfully. Knowing this about himself does not equally mean that he knew all about Jesus however, this would come to him not til after His resurrection.
