Notes: Jesus is now on the move. As He moves we will see a myriad of people react to His movements, each believing or disbelieving a manufactured idea of who He is and what He is intending. We see from our evolving context that man is not particularly adept at formulating such righteousness driven calculations and discernments.

What is man believing/doing?:

Picture it: A roman gentile is beseeching healing from a Jewish prophet, a military leader over a hundred seeks healing for one of his lowly servants, insisting that the authority of Jesus can operate similarly to his and be delegated by word alone. The story deepens further. The Centurion turns out to be one who had built the Jews a local synagogue. The priests of that synagogue are sent by him to beseech Jesus to come heal the servant. The priests esteem this Centurion as worthy of this healing, yet it is clear from the Centurion's own word that he did not feel himself worthy (being a gentile, perhaps being polytheistic, perhaps being a recent Jewish convert).

I find it interesting that Jesus took the occasion to use this foreign man's awkward but unusually insightful faith as a backdrop to convey a stern warning to all the Jewish people that not all the children of the present kingdom were going to make it to see the next. We have the context of an astounding sermon and the advance preparations of the greatest prophet born of woman and even forty-two old testament generations to explain to us why they would not. Plus we have the context if the Apostle John is to be believed that Jesus only said this because the Father God had told Him to declare this and do this publicly at this time. This is where we really need to be reading this day's event with the understanding of broader spiritual context.

What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:

We must gather that while one servant's healing is important to the man and servant, the greater message is to the nation as a whole that their self absorbed religiosity is going to be as much of a hindrance as will be a help. The question largely comes down to worthiness which the nation largely feels it can determine. The fact is that none are worthy, not Jew, not Gentile. Who can judge one worthy and the other not? This is the poorness of spirit (sound familiar?) Jesus promised to bless in which the true (narrow?) pathway to righteousness in/of Christ is forged.

The challenge then is made and we will soon begin to see how it will be responded to. Without the connection Father to Son the outcome can nearly be guaranteed. Once the connection is shown forth, it will be for each man to judge which course to pursue. According to this passage, many will unfortunately choose to continue on the same old course that the Law was intended to make us aware of. Why? Why indeed!


While the faith of the Centurion tends to be our common focus, it was perception of his unworthiness that became this man's strength of faith; this despite his many monumental good works. It was from this personal deficit that the association of authority came to mind, from mind to the approach that he would take when face to face with Jesus.

Out of the hundreds or thousands of healings that day, the author chose to point this one out specifically as a lesson to us all.

Where did all these sick people come from? Intellectually we want to put sickness and calamity off at a safe distance. We don't mind theorizing and philosophizing singing psalms with grandiose intents. Here though, people are pouring out into the cities and into the streets almost in complete mayheim; no doubt an overwhelming site. These people were in close proximity all of this time though we chose not to see them. They are driven now by the lightening bolt of hope that they see in Jesus. How does one intellectualize this? How does one devise grand intent? The immediate religious consequence to the elite religious class must have been stifling.

Key Messages:

    What does this say about our present condition?
  1. The empathy for another in torment can just as easily be justified as something they deserve or should have been cautious of or blame somehow put to their account. People are fired. People are denied coverage. People are seen as weak and infantile making more of their suffering than warranted. This becomes more and more true in legalistic environments. Worthy they are, unworthy are the others facing these calamities.
  2. The observance of torment can be repulsive and fearful even leading to the blaming of God.
  3. There are certain similarities between how we operate daily and how the Godhead operates; if we only knew which. This man stumbled upon one.
  4. There remains controversy as to what faith is capable of producing itself and what restrictions faith surrenders to God's authority through Christ.
