Today's Verse:

kjv@Luke:1:5-25

kjv@Luke:1:5 @ There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

kjv@Luke:1:6 @ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

kjv@Luke:1:7 @ And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

kjv@Luke:1:8 @ And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

kjv@Luke:1:9 @ According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

kjv@Luke:1:10 @ And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

kjv@Luke:1:11 @ And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

kjv@Luke:1:12 @ And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

kjv@Luke:1:13 @ But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

kjv@Luke:1:14 @ And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

kjv@Luke:1:15 @ For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

kjv@Luke:1:16 @ And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

kjv@Luke:1:17 @ And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

kjv@Luke:1:18 @ And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

kjv@Luke:1:19 @ And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

kjv@Luke:1:20 @ And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

kjv@Luke:1:21 @ And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

kjv@Luke:1:22 @ And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

kjv@Luke:1:23 @ And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

kjv@Luke:1:24 @ And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

kjv@Luke:1:25 @ Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

Notes:

Of the certainties Luke seeks to declare, the certainty of the historical time frame comes first. In that time the position and location of one Zacharias could easily be substantiated by those of this generation; the parishioners of that local synagogue could attest to the mysterious circumstances surrounding the elderly couple's surprise birth. This is important because combining the familiarity with and certainty of Zacharias, the spread of the legend of this miraculous birth and the prophecies that later came from this John would establish the young man John as perhaps the greatest of all national prophets during a long centuries pronounced absence of such prophets.

Prophecy is only true prophecy when it is told/known in advance and when it is finely fulfilled. The implication is that the fellow priests (if not all the townsmen) were told by Zacharias (or those who believed him) of Angel's message. John himself was aware of the his father's prophetic message and preached it to a national audience with surety. It cannot be said that the nation did not know that this prophecy was being believed and acted upon by John and his many disciples when multitudes nationally went to him in the wilderness to be baptized, neither could it be denied by the frigid priesthood in Jerusalem.

There is more to John then John himself could ever produce or effect. Before he is even born the motion is set and things are being established that will make him who he is and the many ways that his establishment would prepare the way for our Lord.

Key Messages:

Declaring the Certainty

Angels:

kjv@Hebrews:1:14 @ Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Prophets:

kjv@Amos:3:7 @ Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

kjv@2Peter:1:21 @ For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Heart:

kjv@Jeremiah:17:9 @ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Disobedience:

kjv@Leviticus:26:14 @ But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;

kjv@Leviticus:26:15 @ And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:

kjv@Leviticus:26:16 @ I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

kjv@Leviticus:26:17 @ And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.

kjv@Leviticus:26:18 @ And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.

kjv@Leviticus:26:19 @ And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:

kjv@Leviticus:26:20 @ And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.

kjv@Leviticus:26:21 @ And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.

kjv@Leviticus:26:22 @ I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate.

kjv@Leviticus:26:23 @ And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me;

kjv@Leviticus:26:24 @ Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.

kjv@Leviticus:26:25 @ And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

kjv@Leviticus:26:26 @ And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied.

kjv@Leviticus:26:27 @ And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me;

kjv@Leviticus:26:28 @ Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.

kjv@Leviticus:26:29 @ And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.

kjv@Leviticus:26:30 @ And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.

kjv@Leviticus:26:31 @ And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours.

kjv@Leviticus:26:32 @ And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it.

kjv@Leviticus:26:33 @ And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.

kjv@Leviticus:26:34 @ Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies' land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.

kjv@Leviticus:26:35 @ As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it.

kjv@Leviticus:26:36 @ And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.

kjv@Leviticus:26:37 @ And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

kjv@Leviticus:26:38 @ And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.

kjv@Leviticus:26:39 @ And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies' lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.

kjv@Leviticus:26:40 @ If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;

kjv@Leviticus:26:41 @ And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity:

kjv@Leviticus:26:42 @ Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.

kjv@Leviticus:26:43 @ The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes.

kjv@Leviticus:26:44 @ And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God.

kjv@Leviticus:26:45 @ But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.

kjv@Leviticus:26:46 @ These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.

Prophecy regarding John:

kjv@Isaiah:40:3 @ The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

kjv@Malachi:3:1 @ Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
