The FaithOfJesus2 Daily Devotional

kjv@Revelation:14:12 @ Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

( FaithOfJesus thread begun by pcarr:RandyP )

Today's Verse:

kjv@Matthew:6:16 @ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

kjv@Matthew:6:17 @ But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

kjv@Matthew:6:18 @ That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

Note: Several years after Jesus' death and resurrection the now Apostle Peter was quoted as saying (paraphrased) "if we find our selves lacking in the fruit resultant from the knowledge that Jesus our Christ wants us operating and being fruitful in, it is because we have been shortsighted even to blindness with it and have forgotten that we have been purged of our former natures" kjv@2Peter:1 . Peter may have left this sermon on this evening shortsighted with what it had planted into him, he was not however short sighted with it thankfully after the Holy Spirit got a hold of it!

What is man believing/doing?:

Let us separate ourselves from the obvious context of forty-two generations of the Abrahamic covenant coming down to this despite every good intention, the destruction and dispersion of the nation Israel for millennium to come for rejecting it's Savior. Let's look at it instead as any casual reader would: fasting for the show of it. Most readers would say "fine...I have never done that" and "there is another bad thing that I have never done". "Moving on to eye for an eye... okay"!

Let's now add back in the greater context. The tribes of Israel have fasted probably from day one, just as they have prayed and given alms and done all manner of religion; this is after all a nation like no other presumably built upon a long standing covenant with Almighty God. God however has been complaining about these very practices as they have played out according to men's manufactured righteousness nearly continually ever since. Do we take from that that they have been close to the mark all along just needing an extra push?

Let's look at it another way. Erase some of the future context. Jesus dies, but no resurrection. Do the disciples that survive Him because of this sermon know any better how to fast/pray/give alms? The answer is that man cannot be taught to obey certain principals in order to complete those final unfeigned steps to righteousness, man must have Jesus to cleanse him free of the corruption that is causing his utter spiritual failure.

The problems appears to be that man is doing just as he as done all along without questioning it any further. He has no problems with the resemblances of religion (alms/pray/fasting/tithes). People from many faiths round the world approach God in the same manner; what makes their observances any less or greater than ours if not the knowledge of God in Christ?

What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:

Man by his own manufactured righteousness does not know God; not anyone, not the real God as only God HIMSELF can reveal. They do not have this because they are just now given the opportunity to accept Jesus as the outward revelation of God. Until they settle on this point all other points of religiosity are manufactured. In a sense they are doing what they have always done because that was all until Jesus that was available to them. Now that Jesus is known (and God through Him) the truthful standard has been shifted from what hasn't been available to what is now being rejected by them. To continue further in the former regard when the new regard is in full effect is but adding insult to sure callousness.

Key Messages:

    What does this say about our present condition?
  1. People from all over the world of many faiths fast for very similar reasons; there seems to be a universal awareness that the body and soul need frequent realigning with the spirit. The object or deity to which the fast is made differs however, and if there be only one true object the experience inherently becomes counterfeit and artificial apart from that one object.
  2. That it leaves the voluntary and innocent intention so soon and becomes such religiosity and legalism or becomes the outwardly sign of piety should be telling of man's present condition. It shows that the focus becomes on what self and or others are thinking rather than the body/soul fully surrendered reaching out spiritually hungry for God.
