Matthew:13:47-52 The Parable of the Net

nkjv@Matthew:13:47 @ "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind,

nkjv@Matthew:13:48 @ which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away.

What is God doing?

"So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just"

Two things are identified in this verse right from the start that God is going to do: end the world, use the angels to execute HIS final judgment.

In ending this present world HE is making way for the world to come (which is a truly good thing). The wicked will not be part of that world, thus the need for severing the wicked from the just. All along in this string of parables we have focused on the process that the just undergo to become that just and mature vessel. Essentially it could be put that Christ is the Just One and because of Him and what He is now accomplishing He is made of the Father He is the Justifier of all those others who have their belief/dependence fully on Him. The just are essentially the justified and they are justified solely because of Him. The wicked are His enemy by their own volition, therefore have not undergone the process detailed in the parables and are not in any way justified in order to be just.

It appears to be a fairly clear distinction for the angels between just and wicked, such as sitting in front of the net and sorting one type of fish from all the others or one type of wheat from all the fruitless tare. The judgment seems to have more to do about what type of fish is wanted and where the others will be sent, everything else seems to happen quite matter of fact like. There also is that form of judgment beforehand that determines when the net is ultimately full.

"Have ye understood all these things"?

"All these things" probably is better represented by the meaning of "all these parables". Remember that the use of parables is intended to reveal secret meanings to some but hide even that which is initially understood by others. We have seen that Jesus has spoken in parables both publicly and privately and for a certain time has spoken in nothing but parables intending just this. He has also begun to explain the meaning of them intended when asked.

What is man doing?

"They say unto him, Yea, Lord"

It is doubtful that these disciples really understand any of this until after the death and resurrection of Jesus which in John's gospel account Jesus describes in terms of His "glorification" from the Father. Not till then with the further teaching of the then indwelling Holy Spirit do these things finally take root. Jesus has been planting seeds in these men that He knows have not yet germinated. One day they will know the leading of the Spirit because in it they will hear the voice of their Shepherd within it. Then and only then will the Spirit make these many things fully known to them.

Until that time, these men can say "yea, Lord", they can fully believe that what they understand coincides with the meaning that Jesus intend through the parable to deliver to them, but they are two separate things for now. We should think the same until taught by the Holy Spirit. The teaching of the Holy Spirit does not come except in Jesus and without an open contrite willingness to be corrected and redirected and to be open vessels.

What does this passage tell us about the about the commands and faith of Jesus that saints are to keep/guard?

"Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old".

A scribe is a teacher. The are two types of teachers: those that are instructed in the kingdom and those who are not. In order to be an instructor in other words one needs first to be instructed. We have learned that in order to be instructed in the kingdom one has to be instructed by the indwelling Holy Spirit; not just of human reason and rationale or tradition. We have also learned that our Lord did not come to destroy the Old Testament Law or its' prophets but to fulfill them.

Remember the analogy Jesus once gave of the wine skins, pouring new wine in old skins or old wine into new skins? That is not to mean that each wine cannot stand side by side in it's own right. I believe that this truth helps clarify this current parables' illustration of a house holder bringing forth treasures old and new. The older treasures benefit greatly by the light of the new spiritual understanding. The new treasures are greatly substantiated and verified by new spiritual understanding of these older treasures. Both treasures are to be brought out by the householder in order to be a true scribe instructed/instructing in/of the kingdom as it really spiritually is.

This exhortation and these understandings as a whole are a commandment of our Lord to be kept by all saints.
