What is God doing?

God of course is the ultimate judge. We shall all stand before the judgment seat of God; HIS judgment will be final. No one really can argue about this.

God has also laid down the Law. The law really consist of two sides, the side that breaks it (ie murder) and the side that must determine the lawful thing to do to enforce it. There is no sense in having a law if the law is not enforced; Israel often was rebuked by God for just that. Judgment as concerning the law is given to be a much more corporate thing implemented through a system of justice typically with a court of peers or priests or judges.

God has also called the saints to be righteous which in Hebrew is interchangeable with being just which gravitates towards discernment/judgment/enforcement such as in judging the cause of the fatherless/oppressed etc...

What is man doing?

The emphasis man's corruption is injecting into this comes in several forms. One direction it takes is the god's in their own eyes direction where the individual is judge of everything/everyone bypassing all that God has done to establish equitable checks and balances. Another is toward the abandonment of any and all judgment, every man to do what is right in his own eyes. Then there is the hypocritical mode where I am free to judge you, but I don't have to apply the same standard to myself. All of these are massive corruptions on the extremes, typically we hover somewhere not quite so extreme but corrupt to various degrees just the same. I am not sure that any of us know exactly where the true center of the spectrum actually resides.

What does this passage tell us about the about the commands and faith of Jesus that saints are to keep/guard?

"Judge not, that ye be not judged" is the command. Like with all spiritual meaning we really have to search that understanding out prayerfully. If a brother literally had a glass shard embedded in his eye it would be unmerciful not to get the tweezers out and attempt to remove it; so it would be as well in the spiritual sense. However, if the one tasked for removing the shard had his vision blocked by his wife's embedded frying pan that act would not longer be merciful, it would be a bloody mess.

"For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again". As funny as it sounds, I want to be judged, I am going to be judged ultimately anyway, I only ask that along with God's just and rightful judgment beside me stand my Lord Jesus advocating for God's tremendous mercy. By this quote I understand that to receive mercy I must also judge mercifully. To judge not at all in many cases would be unmerciful. To judge falsely when only half heartedly seeking the truth of a matter is unmerciful/inequitable as well. To judge by a different standard than I judge myself or to not judge myself at all is down right hypocritical.

"First cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye". Is there any one that actually sees perfectly clear? Probably not! I suggest to you that if any one is moving closer to that point it is the man or women that is poor of spirit/the meek/hungering and thirsting for righteousness/being pure of heart/the peacemakers. And as we return to our sermon benchmarks let us also consider those who mourn.

It is with great sorrow that we must reflect upon those souls that are lost to us now because the irreversible and corrupted forms of judgment we have saddled them with in the past. I am thinking of the people who will not come to Christ for their salvation because of what you or I or us collectively have judged rashly or judged inconsistently or judged unmercifully or judged hypocritically. To them the church is a place of hypocrites. As much as that is true and inexcusable, it is also become the beam in their eye preventing them from seeing clear enough to remove anyone elses.

"Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine". Dogs and swine are a judgment as is what you believe to be your pearls. The one pure constant is what is holy, for it is what has been given by God. How can I give that holy thing that God has given me to someone I consider to be a dog? Chances are that I will not. And if I do chances are just as unlikely that they will receive it knowing that I have such critical judgment of them. They will trample over what I am attempting to give them of course. The problem is not in what is holy. The problem is not in them (we are all dog and swine just the same except in Christ) (we have all been in the position of first having to receive what is holy from someone else). The problem is with our personal judgment of them. Would you have received the preaching of the gospel had you sensed the disgust the preacher had over you? Why think that they would be any different?
