Servant and Apostle Of?

(child thread of FoundationsOfTheLikePreciousFaith series begun by RandyP )

kjv@2Peter:1:1 @ Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ...

To What/Whom are we Servants and Apostles?

kjv@John:12:26 @ If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

There shouldn't be much of any debate, the majority of our time we are serving our own selves. Let's just be honest about it. Even when serving another's interest it is typically because it serves our own best interest; even when done under brutish threat. Of course we can slap a Christian label on our efforts. Little that can be done ever changes the action's underlying character though. It remains our self that is largely being served.

One can be following the course of their own answers projecting them as being from God. One can be serving their own problems no matter how much they think that they have the right answer, because the answer is generated deep from within the problem itself; it is merely a continuation of the problem in a slightly modified form of self. One can even cherry pick otherwise beneficial Bible verses and turn them onside attempting to have those verses serve a preformulated self derived answer or expectation. Thus we have Christian marriages in the state that they are etc...

We have already begun in the previous section to consider the scriptural concept of regeneration. The implications of that regeneration are enormous upon the topic now at the forefront. It is not that Peter is a better person now because he is making better decisions, it is that he is being severely effected by the regeneration now operating within him and in that regeneration he is highly motivated to surrender his own complications to better serve the vast and crucial interests of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Because of regeneration this man both serves and is an Apostle of Jesus Christ in it's only true form.

While we may not all be called in the capital "A" sense of "Apostle" as was Peter, we are in fact each called to be kingdom ambassador/delegates of Christ. Shamefully, what we have been mostly representative of in this modern world to this point is of the same exact fabric as the rest of the world: the service to self. It is hard to look at the difficulties besetting us currently any other way.

Contextual Anchors - Servant/Apostle

Note: There is an overwhelming amount of scripture needing to be provided here, so where appropriate key foundations have been broken off into digestible pieces. It will become more and more important to keep coming back to these foundations and explore each morsel's greater depth and individual context as they will become the fuel that ignites true spiritual productivity. These pieces then can be used as element specific study/meditation tools.

1. Servant:

(see: Word study - DoulosServant or slidy:DoulosServant )

2. Apostle:

Quoted resource: strongs 'G652'

G652 @ ἀπόστολος apostolos ap-os'-tol-os From G649; a delegate; specifically an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ (apostle) (with miraculous powers): - apostle messenger he that is sent.

(see: Word study - ApostolosApostle or slidy:ApostolosApostle )

Jesus Christ:

Note: We will hold off for the moment fastening bulk context till the next page foundation. Suffice it for now that all the context that would be for us to consider in this present regard ties into the " FaithObtainedThroughRighteousnessGodSavior " clause upcoming. We will also consider this further in the KnowledgeOfJesusChrist section ahead.

Doctrinal Context: Sanctification

(see: Topical study TorreySanctification or slidy:TorreySanctification )

Practical Aspects

The regeneration of the previous section and the sanctification of this can be thought of as going hand in hand. It is the regeneration in Christ that sets us apart/it is the continuing and increasing sanctification brought about through the attempt to serve Christ fully brings out our regeneration. Without the two in working conjunction what results spiritually is what we presently have: an unfruitful spiritual funk.

What made a man like Peter different from the man he had for so long been (even during his three years of discipleship) was that now he was both regenerated spiritually and because of that lead into serving and being an Apostle of the person of Christ Jesus Himself; not some self fabricated notion of whom he - Peter ought best to be.

Given the present situations and traits we believers are finding ourselves being beset in, the question has to be asked "what is it that we are a servant/apostle of"? Are we serving our own problems? Are we serving our own answers? Are our answers simply serving our problems? Is it this service to problems and answers that we are rather being living apostles/ambassadors of instead of Christ?

The oddity of our present exercise is that without knowing the "righteousness of God and Savior" soon to be examined, we cannot reliably confirm whether we indeed serve the Jesus Christ beyond our own wish and manufacturing. Yet, this odd dilemma is exactly where the majority of all believers seem to be at; we believe in a Jesus Christ for their salvation one day future and for the provision of their many needs today, but little is sought out about the essential righteousness that makes Him any different from the image of Christ that they (or anyone with/without Christ) would themselves manufacture. We are stuck at the same point of only serving what seems right or feels best according to us. Some of us are even operating as if it is Jesus Christ needing to serve our wants and needs.

The topical scriptures gathered above will help us better understand and appreciate the depth of this particular foundation and to better question whether our present state of affairs is a result of faithfully serving and being delegate of Jesus Christ and His rightful claims and needs or if in fact it is product of us being such to our own conceived interests.

Let's consider this in the light of whether they indeed be the regenerated actions of a "servant and apostle of Jesus Christ".
