Please turn in your bibles to the 16th chapter of the Gospel according to John. Today's message I would like to call "These things I have spoken to you".

Introduction based upon this chapter and the previous 2

There are 3 Preliminary considerations to lay out on the table before we get started:
  1. Why Jesus is telling the disciples this. (luckily He identifies these by the phrase...)
  2. Why the disciples are having difficulty grasping all this. (it is more than obvious by their questions that they are)
  3. What the work of the Holy Spirit in this is to be. (a themes He has already begun to develop)

Context = Jesus' last major discourse with His disciples before His capture and trial.

Why Jesus is telling the disciples this?

9 Reasons "These things" have been spoken to the disciples (from the context of nkjv@John:14-16)
    (I will summarize)
  1. nkjv@John:14:26 the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name
  2. nkjv@John:15:11 that My joy may remain in you
  3. nkjv@John:15:11 that your joy may be full
  4. nkjv@John:16:1 that you should not be made to stumble
  5. nkjv@John:16:4 that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them
  6. nkjv@John:16:6 because I have told... sorrow has filled your heart
  7. nkjv@John:16:12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them
  8. nkjv@John:16:25 the time is coming when... I will tell you plainly about the Father
  9. nkjv@John:16:33 that in Me you may have peace

Why the disciples are having difficulty grasping all this?

What is the work of the Holy Spirit in this is to be?

DIR:BE BRIEF

10 works of the Holy Spirit (again from the context of nkjv@John:14-16)
  1. nkjv@John:14:26 teach you all things
  2. nkjv@John:14:26 bring to your remembrance all things
  3. nkjv@John:15:26 testify of Me
  4. nkjv@John:16:8 convict the world of sin
  5. nkjv@John:16:8 (convict the world) of righteousness
  6. nkjv@John:16:8 (convict the world) of judgment
  7. nkjv@John:16:13 guide you into all truth (not speak on His own authority)
  8. nkjv@John:16:13 tell you of things to come
  9. nkjv@John:16:14 glorify Me (take of what is Mine and declare it to you)

No matter what the situation is today that we find ourselves I believe that it would be wise for each of us to consider these very same initial points of reference! What Jesus has spoken and the reason for it/what the work of the Holy Spirit is to be/why it is we come to have various problems with all that.

So let's begin reading from the Word of God:

nkjv@John:16:1-3 @"These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.

2 Types of people identified here:
  1. The disciples:
  2. They that have not known the Father/Son:

Why were they killed? because "they" have not known the Father nor Me. Many think that they know, but no one actually does unless the Son/Spirit makes the Father known. Therefore these Jesus haters do not know the Father.

Add to that that they've now been exposed:

nkjv@John:15:21-24 ...If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.

Now we can better sense why Jesus is telling the disciples "these things":
  1. nkjv@John:14:26 the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name (THEY ARE GOING TO NEED THE SPIRIT)
  2. nkjv@John:15:11 that My joy may remain in you (HOW WOULD ANY JOY REMAIN WITH THE SPIRIT)
  3. nkjv@John:15:11 that your joy may be full (HIS JOY BEING GIVEN)
  4. nkjv@John:16:1 that you should not be made to stumble (ONLY IN/BY HIS STRENGTH)
  5. nkjv@John:16:4 that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them (SPIRIT BRINGS REMEMBRANCE)
  6. nkjv@John:16:6 because I have told... sorrow has filled your heart (HUMAN SORROW IS NATURAL - SPIRITUAL JOY SUPERCEEDS)
  7. nkjv@John:16:12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them
  8. nkjv@John:16:25 the time is coming when... I will tell you plainly about the Father
  9. nkjv@John:16:33 that in Me you may have peace (NOT PEACE AS THE WORLD WOULD GIVE - THE PEACE I GIVE YOU)

Not everyone resisting such conviction become murderers literally, but there is that tendency for all against Christ to bury that unpleasant conviction as far from one's self as possible. (Note that the original disciples have been dead over 2000 years and the enemy is still trying to bury them far away).

Paul (Saul) himself was one of these Jesus haters himself though at the time he didn't equate that to being a Father hater. Listen as he confesses:

nkjv@Acts:26:9 @"Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

Paul now surely equates Jesus hating with Father hating!

Let's continue reading:

nkjv@John:16:4-8 @But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. "And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. "But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, "Where are You going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Remembrance = work of the Holy Spirit as stated kjv@John:14:26 (remember kjv@John:14:26?)

I find it interesting that this same night in the garden when they are supposed to be praying an arm shot away from Jesus that they enter not temptation the disciples are found "sleeping for sorrow" nkjv@Luke:22:45.

So what is Jesus' answer to all that? DIR:BE BRIEF - EXPLANATION TO COME
What advantage do we now have in Christ?

The work of the Holy Spirit
  1. nkjv@John:14:26 teach you all things (spiritual ways of seeing all things)
  2. nkjv@John:14:26 bring to your remembrance all things
  3. nkjv@John:15:26 testify of Me (human agency/scripture old+new/shaping of events...)
  4. nkjv@John:16:8 convict the world of sin (+ our sin when it's there)
  5. nkjv@John:16:8 (convict the world) of righteousness (proving God's/disproving ours)
  6. nkjv@John:16:8 (convict the world) of judgment (God's rule verses World's ruler/no match)
  7. nkjv@John:16:13 guide you into all truth (not speak on His own authority)
  8. nkjv@John:16:13 tell you of things to come
  9. nkjv@John:16:14 glorify Me (take of what is Mine and declare it to you)

Advantage? Jesus = externally (for now) to 1 man/Spirit = because of Christ to all men

Note: Even later, when these disciples rejoiced to see their risen Lord we see them still having trouble grasping the continuing motion of all this:

nkjv@Acts:1:6-8 @Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?"

Many times a similar lack of spiritual discernment is the exact same situation being identified in our own lives.

Perhaps we can listen through their particular questions to Jesus to get a broader sense of what we need better to discern:

nkjv@John:14:5 @Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"

nkjv@John:14:8 @Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us."

nkjv@John:14:22 @Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?"

Back now to our text:

nkjv@John:16:8-11 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

Conviction:

    CONVICTION OF SIN
  1. Sin is known universally within the moral conscience of man (suggested nkjv@Romans:2:12-16 GENTILES - LAW WRITTEN ON HEART/LAW TO THEMSELVES/CONSCIENCE BEING WITNESS) (disconnect from = psychopath)
  2. Sin is further known in light of the natural creation/order
  3. Sin is clearly evident observing all current aspects of human life and that continuously throughout history (WHEN WE EXAMINE OUR OWN LIVES AND OF THE FAMILIES/COMMUNITIES - OBVIOUS WE ARE FALLEN)
  4. Sin is gravely made fully known by the Law of God
  5. And in the case of Christians we know our sin are made known by the Spirit (AS IF WALKING INTO THE LIGHT FOR FULL INSPECTION)

We would do well here and now to bring back into our full remembrance the words of Jesus our Christ as recorded by John the Apostle by the conviction of the Holy Spirit:

nkjv@John:3:18-21 @"He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."

SIGNIFICANCE = UNBELIEF TIED TO UNWANTED EXPOSURE

nkjv@John:8:23-24 @And He said to them, "You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."

SIGNIFICANCE = BY CLOSING THAT ONE DOOR THEY HAVE CLOSED UP ALL LEGITIMATE HOPE

nkjv@John:8:42-47 @Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God."

SIGNIFICANCE = FATHER THAT THEY ARE LISTENING TO IS NOT THE FATHER WHO SENT CHRIST

nkjv@John:12:47-48 @And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him--the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

SIGNIFICANCE = JUDGED BY THE WORD THEY THEMSELVES CHOSE TO REJECT

nkjv@John:15:22-25 @If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me hates My Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, "They hated Me without a cause.'

SIGNIFICANCE = NO EXCUSE? WITHOUT CAUSE? HATING FATHER AND THE SON HE SENT TO DELIVER US FROM SUCH A CURSE?

CONVICTION OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (GOD'S VS SELF) (WHAT IS RIGHT IN HIS EYE VASTLY DIFFERS)
  1. God's Holiness = light/no darkness can dwell in HIM
  2. God's Mercy = not to end but provide suitable means
  3. God's Providence = not accident/planned for from start/Jesus always intended (Decreed beforehand)
  4. God's Judgment = great for those on positive side/horrific for those not
  5. God's Righteousness = imputed by faith in Jesus solely by HIS grace and good pleasure

    CONVICTION OF JUDGMENT
  1. because the ruler of this world is judged!
  2. implies that those choosing yet to be ruled by ruler have also been and will be judged
  3. Satan judged because he in no way had/has the power to stop this righteousness from happening.
